MURS Channel 2
Sundays, 6:15 PM NO License, NO Skills Required. "Open the box, turn it on." The Multi Use Radio System is a little-known gem in the radio world. It is sometimes a better choice in wooded and hilly environments. Unfortunately, there is not all that much in the way of dedicated equipment available. The 2 watt BTECH MURS-V2 radio is reasonably priced and performs quite well, especially when paired with a mast antenna such as the BRC HP-50-V. That's the setup I use, and it fully complies with FCC requirements. While the more powerful "5R" family of radios have been known to be used for MURS, they are not FCC approved for MURS and should be avoided under the current rules of law. |
FRS Channel 2
Sundays, 6:45 PM NO License, NO Skills Required "Open the box, turn it on." The Family Radio Service is the band most identified with box store, bubble-pack radios. On channel 2 (462.5875 MHz) it is limited by the FCC to 2 watts and a fixed antenna. That configuration is approved for this net, and should not be confused with the more powerful General Mobile Radio Service radios which can operate as high as 50 watts! While these may be used on this net, a GMRS license is required. Those operating on GMRS should act as "hubs" to the lesser powered FRS "Spokes", thus acting as "Comms Captains" for your neighborhood. Please let me know if you are acting as a relay in that capacity. |
THESE WORK WHEN CELLS FAIL AND TOWERS BURN.
This net accomplishes these objectives:
- Fills in a geographic gap - the S.L. Cutoff corridor - between the HooDoo and Blanchard radio groups;
- Addresses the SCORES of people who need an entry-level radio group - "open the box, turn it on";
- Furthers the concept of neighborhood hub and spoke communications, within walking /bicycling distance;
- Identifies the "I have a radio but don't know what to do with it" crowd;
- Gives them, if desired, training opportunities to participate in licensed HAM / GMRS nets;
- Cultivates future "Block Captains" for the BCSO Community Watch Program, and
- Improves neighborhood cooperation, communications, trust and trade.
GREETINGS!
This is the origin of our area's longest running LICENSE FREE Radio Net, going back about 10 years when North Idaho's first C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) was formed. We ran licensed HAM and GMRS nets, as well as license-free MURS and FRS nets from here, the Clagstone & Spirit Lake Cutoff area. These have evolved into a number of current successful nets, to include Blanchard, Hoodoo and AtholWood. Our goal from the start was to create "Hub and Spoke" radio communication networks - "nets" - among neighbors who were within walking / bicycling / horseback of each other. Hundreds have heard the call and joined together in this, a truly blessed venture.
Now we are both expanding and fine-tuning the process.
As MURS frequencies can often perform better than FRS / GMRS simplex in our hilly and wooded region, we have now improved the reach of our basic Multi-Use Radio Service setup with a dedicated radio and antenna system.
A dedicated FRS net, assisted by GMRS relay volunteers, is a first in the area and is geared to those who can open a box and turn the radio on!
This allows us to communicate with those who are on the fringe areas of our local groups, while providing a unique, legal method to unite licensed GMRS and HAM operators with their unlicensed MURS and (bubble-pack walkie-talkie) FRS radio brethren. Miles of Comms! No Test. No License. No Fee. Just Fun.
Please join us in our FREE nets every Sunday evening; see times above and set your phone alarm! Unlike HAM or GMRS, our call signs are not based upon our FCC license; in fact, those licensed call signs are NOT to be used on unlicensed bands. Kindly fill out the brief form below and we'll create one for you . . . no charge! If you don't have a radio, or have not programmed it, or have no idea what we're talking about, let us know! The answers are easier and cheaper than you might think. The rewards are greater than you can imagine.
